PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals, etc., in high yield, in a short contact time, at low reaction temperature, without using a diluent, by reacting chlorotoluene with HF and Cl2 in vapor phase in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be prepared by the vapor-phase reaction of chlorotoluene with HF and Cl2 in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an alkali metal fluoride supported by chromium oxide (III) or partially fluorinated chromium oxide (III), at 350-450 deg.C under 1-3 abs. atm. at a space velocity of 200-2,000hr<-1>. The amount of the alkali metal supported on the carrier is 0.01-0.5mol, preferably 0.02-0.35mol per 100g of the chromium oxide (III) or the partially fluorinated chromium oxide (III). The catalyst can be prepared by impregnating an aqueous solution of an alkali metal fluoride into chromium oxide (III), etc. |
