Using this method, it is possible to alter the functioning of surface-mounted WC flushing cisterns, which use their entire water contents at each flushing, in a very simple way, such that both flushing with the entire quantity of water and flushing with part-quantities, which can be infinitely adapted to the particular flushing need, is possible. This water-saving alteration is brought about by a permanently flexible plastic sponge piece adapted to the particular flushing-cistern model in terms of size. This plastic sponge piece is fixed in the flushing-cistern lid (e.g. by adhesive bonding), in such a way that when the lid is mounted it bears, by way of the centre of its underside, with moderate pressure on the outlet valve or another constructional part closely associated therewith and moved upwards on actuation of the triggering handle (see drawing). Fastened in this way, the sponge piece is compressed against the lid by the outlet valve or constructional part (e.g. pusher lever) moved upwards on triggering of the flushing operation. With the increased elastic restoring force produced thereby, the sponge piece closes the outlet valve automatically, against the pressure of the water flowing out, as soon as the triggering handle is released. <IMAGE>
