The invention relates to a core for the production of narrow channels in castings, having a thin outer wire of round or similar cross-section wound into a coil. It is the object of the invention to provide a core which is simple to produce and has any desired cross-section, for example not only a round cross-section but an oval or rectangular cross-section, and with successive core sections of different diameters and furthermore with sharp curvatures and deviations while ensuring that the core is easy to remove from the casting and produces smooth walls to the channel. For this purpose, the invention provides that the wire consist of soft steel wire and the turns (9) of the wire coil (1) have large spacings (a) from one another in relation to the diameter (D) of the wire while the inner space of the wire coil and the interspace between the wire turns is filled with core sand (2). <IMAGE>
