A ribbon cartridge for use in different types of daisywheel or golf ball typewriters or printers is fitted with two spindles, a supply spindle with a supply coil of new ink ribbon which is coiled onto the receiving spindle after use. The cartridge has two projecting arms with a ribbon outlet on one arm and a ribbon inlet on the other arm, between which a path is defined for the ribbon to pass by the daisywheel or golf ball. Two drive gearwheels are provided which are in engagement with one another and can be set in rotation by the ink ribbon drive shaft of the machine, the second drive gearwheel possibly acting as direction-changing wheel. Compared to the basic construction according to Patent Application P 3046004.9, the first drive wheel is directly connected to the axis of the ink ribbon advancing wheel, with the result that power is saved in the drive transmission and the construction is secured in an improved manner. The ink ribbon is held permanently tautly by an additional ribbon tension spring. A matching dispatch package is described which protects the ink ribbon cartridge from impacts and vibrations during dispatch and holds the supply coil in its flat shape.
