An aromatic sulfide polymer, from which molded articles can be prepared, is produced by reacting together in an organic solvent elemental sulfur, a polyhalogen-substituted aromatic compound, an aldehyde or condensate thereof as a reductant to remove excess oxygen and a caustic alkali as a scavenger for gaseous carbon dioxide.
