The compound of formula (II): <CHEM> namely (5R, 6S)-3-[2-(Z)-(2-aminoethoxycarbonyl)ethenylthio]-6-[(R)-1-hydroxyethyl ]-7-oxo-1- azabicyclo[3.2.0]-hept-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid; is useful in the treatment of a bacterial infection in animals and is preferably administered as a pharmaceutical formulation in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Tne compound may be prepared by, e.g. reaction of the thiol with a compound of formula (V): H-C IDENTICAL C-CO2CH2CH2X (V) wherein X is amino or a precursor thereof.
