In an hydraulically loaded roller producing a controlled pressure nip with a second roller 12, a cylindrical roll shell 13 in nip-correcting cooperation with a non-rotating centre shaft 15 is journalled at its ends on said shaft by a self-aligning, as shown, spherical-roller, bearings 18, the centre shaft is supported at its ends by means accommodating bending of the shaft due to nip-correcting pressure reaction, and the shell is driven by a driving shaft 48 through an internal spur gear 51 journalled on the centre shaft and fast with the driving shaft, spur pinions 50, 29 fast on twin shafts 30 diametrically positioned with respect to the centre shaft and journalled in bearing housings 54, 53 fast with the centre shaft, and an internal spur gear 27 fast with the shell, this gear drive being accommodated within the radial limits of the shell. The shaft 48 may be driven through a conventional, e.g., flexible, coupling. The centre shaft supporting means comprises spherical-section bosses (33) depending from portions (31) of said shaft and rockingly engaging flat bearing surfaces (34) of bases (35) of pedestals (36) having caps (37). One of the centre shaft portions (31) is positioned between the bearing housings 53, 54 and has opposing flats (32) to provide clearance for the shafts 30. The internal gears 50, 27 have seals 70, 61 engaging rings 63, 60 of the bearing housings 54, 53. The latter have dust and lubricant retention seals 59 engaging the shafts 30. The internal gear 27 is bolted to a ring 20 which retains one of the self-aligning bearings 18 and is itself bolted to the shell. The centre shaft carries a radially extensible deflection-controlling pressure shoe (16) rockably mounted on a rectangular piston (17) and in sliding engagement with the shell. The centre shaft is hollow to accommodate fluid pressure lines for the piston (17) and lubricating lines for the shell bearings. |
