An automatic system is used to move a detector over at least one surface of a metal prod. to locate the position of any surface or sub-surface defects. The detector feeds signals representing the location and/or the severity of the defects to a computer. The computer is then used for automatic control of (a) a tool removing the defects, pref. a deseaming burner or a grinding wheel; (b) an inspection appts. confirming the removal of the defects; and (c) a device cleaning the surface of the rectified prod. The defects are pref. located by guiding burner flame along the surface of the prod. and analysing the image of the flame to detect the defects and to provide signals to the computer. Used esp. for the automatic hot deseaming of prods. obtd. by rolling or continuous casting, e.g. steel slabs.
