<p>1353344 Ocean floor nodule processing DEEPSEA VENTURES Inc 26 May 1971 [26 May 1970 (2)] 17243/71 Heading C1A Ocean floor nodules are processed by reacting them with sulphur dioxide or a sulphide ore to form the sulphates of the manganese, nickel, copper and cobalt present in the nodule, the sulphates of at least Ni, Cu, and Co being formed together, extracting at least the Ni, Cu, and Co sulphates into aqueous solution and isolating one or more of the metals from the aqueous solution . To form a leach liquor, the nodule may be reacted with SO 2 and then contacted with H 2 O or ground nodules dispersed in water may be reacted with sulphur dioxide. Oxygen containing gas may be added to the leach liquor to precipitate iron oxide. In another embodiment, dried nodules are reacted in the absence of air with SO 2 to form manganese sulphate, the nodules leached, the solids which are then separated off being contacted with an aqueous solution of SO 2 while passing air through releach liquor to convert iron to iron oxide. In yet a further embodiment a mixture of nodules and sulphide ore is roasted in oxygen and then leached with water. The isolation of metals from the leach liquors by liquid ion exchange involving use of 8-hydroxy quinolines andα-hydroxy oximes and electrolysis is described.</p> |
