Arrangement is intended for producing gas by anaerobic fermentation of biomass which is fed into a closed vessel from which the gas and the at least partly fermented matter is discharged. The biomass is continuously fed into the vessel whilst the temp. therein is maintained between pre-determined limits by (external) heating. The biomass is preferably pre-heated by the discharged gas and by at least part of the (thin) biomass discharged before it mixes with the contents in the vessel. The thin biomass is pref. discharged centrally from the top level of the contents, the fresh matter being fed in concentrically around this discharge area and agitated by some of the gas injected from below. Used for gas prodn. by anaerobic fermentation of liq. biomass (cow manure). The continuous feed and controlled mixing with the contents, combined with controlled heating assisted by pre-heating through the discharging contents, avoids the undesirable temp. fluctuations experienced with batch operation and maintains optimum conditions for the bacterial culture thus maximising gas prodn.
