An attaching unit for attachment to a basic heat sealing machine to heat seal a snap fastener member 16 to a workpiece 5 at the same time as the basic machine is performing another heat sealing operation on the workpiece 5, comprises a frame 2 to be attached directly to a portion 1 of the basic machine and a tool device 6 mounted on the frame 2 to hold the member 16 to be heat sealed, the frame 2 and device 6 being provided with relatively movable co-operatable elements whereby the device 6 may move relative to the frame 2 during the fastener applying operation of the attaching unit to feed the members 16 in succession from a source of supply to a position in which they are disposed for heat sealing to a workpiece. The tool device 6 comprises a rotary member mounted on a shaft 7 slidable in slots 8 in the frame 2. A shoe 10 acted on by a compression spring 12 bears upon pins 11 spaced about and secured to the member 6. The shoe 10 is mounted on pins 13 slidable in bores 14 in the frame 2. Peripheral sockets 15 in the rotary member 6 are shaped so as to receive either a plastic snap fastener stud member or a socket member. As shown in Fig. 3, a strip of socket members 16 connected by breakable portions 17 is fed from a reel (not shown) into the sockets 15 as the member 6 intermittently rotates, a tapered finger 18 assisting the movement into the sockets 15. As the member 6 rotates the portions 17 will be stretched and broken but to ensure complete separation a razor blade 19 is provided to enter one of a series of grooves 9 each time the unit is operated. A generally U-shaped latch 22, Fig. 7, is located in the path of the pins 11 and is normally pressed upwardly by a compression spring 23. The latch 22 is also pressed into lateral pin engaging position by a spring-urged finger 25 pivoted to the frame 2. In operation, the frame 1 of the basic m/c. moves downwardly so that the member 6 with a socket member 16 first contacts the workpiece 5 on a bed plate 4 and the frame 2 then moves downwardly relative to the member 6 due to the sliding arrangement of the shaft 7, the shoe 10 and the pins 13. As the member 6 slides upwardly relative to the frame 2 a pin 11 engages over the latch 22 so that as the frame 2 moves upwardly whilst the member 6 is still in contact with the workpiece 5 the latch 22 pushes on the pin 11 and rotates the member 6 one step so that the next member 16 is in position. A sealing bar 31, Figs. 1 and 3, is provided on the frame 1 to simultaneously form a bar seal with the application of the member 16. High frequency current is supplied to the frame 1 and the bed plate 4. The unit may be attached to either the movable head, as shown, or to the stationary bed of the basic machine.
