Couplings for optical fibres are made by locating the fibre in a coaxial holder in which the fibre is then immobilised by a casting resin or other rigid spacer to a level which leaves the end of the fibre exposed for butting with a complementary fibre or terminal. Pref. the casting resin is a soln. of methyl methacrylate or other resin having a refractive index less than that of the matl. of which the optical fibre is made. The fibre may be initially aligned by an external mandrel which shrouds the tip of the fibre or by lateral, specifically spheres in tangential contact and sized so that fibres pass through one or more interstices. Simpler and cheaper than use of e.g. ruby collars.
|
