In the evaporator of a heat pump a heat exchange is carried out, by removing heat from a gaseous heat carrier with liquid components, for the purpose of warming a heating medium. The heat from the heat carrier is in this case transmitted to the heating medium via a liquid intermediate, which has a lower freezing temperature than the liquid component of the gaseous heat carrier. A vacuum is generated in the evaporator in relation to the environment, which vacuum reduces or prevents a liquid precipitation of the heat carrier. The heat carrier used can be air which has a water component. The evaporator has a bath (24) for the intermediate, for example brine, under an evaporator chamber (47) in which the heat carrier and the intermediate are brought together.
