Copper mould for the continuous casting of steel comprises two opposed rectangular plates, defining the thickness of the cast slab, and two smaller plates between them, defining its width. In contrast to conventional practice, only the lower part of the inner surface exposed to the steel is provided with a protective coating, e.g. of Ni or Co etc. The height of the coating, measured from the lower edge of the mould, is between 1/5 and 4/5 of the total height, pref. between 2/5 and 3/4. While functioning as well as a complete protective coating, the partial coating has proved more durable, and cheaper and easier to replace when worn. Leaving bare Cu at the top improves the cooling and speeds up casting. (First major country equivalent to J57068248).
|
