PURPOSE:To obtain a small-size, inexpensive optical printer having excellent printing speed by providing an optical signal generator consisting of a light source and a liquid crystal micro shutter array. CONSTITUTION:An optical signal generator 18 for printing, consisting of a light source 19, a liquid crystal micro shutter array 20, and a light-focusing fiber lens 50, is provided near a photo-sensitive material 6, and a reflecting mirror 51 to direct an image focused by the optical signal generator 18 to an optical system 10 is provided near an image-focusing optical system 10. In this case, in the array 20, a liquid crystal composition 34 prepared by adding an optically active substance to a Nematic liquid crystal a cross frequency (fc) of 100Hz (at ordinary temperature) at which dielectric anisotropy becomes zero (0) is confined between a glass base plate 31 with signal electrodes 36, 36-1, and 36-2 and a glass base plate 32 with common electrodes 37, 37-1, and 37-2, and two polarizing plates 35 are provided on both sides of the liquid crystal panel.
