A machine for separating the leading bag of a series of bags (W) connected by lines of perforation and dispensed from a roll (24), opening the bag and inserting it into a case comprises feed rollers (28) for advancing the bag to a preselected position (90), movable bag grippers for clampingly engaging the bag at said preselected position, moving the bag relative to the feed rollers (28) to separate it along a line of perforation and moving the side walls of the bag apart to open the bag mouth which has been formed upon said separation, and means for inserting the bag into the case once the bag mouth has been opened. The bag inserting means may comprise an assembly (100) movable into the bag and case or a hopper from which a filling charge is dropped above the case and into the opened bag mouth. One of the bag grippers may have a lateral component of movement relative to the other gripper to facilitate unblocking of the bag side walls during opening.
