In a method of applying a two-part fastening element, such as a stud button, to flat products, such as textile webs of garments, the issue is to connect an insertion part provided with at least one pin to a receptacle for the retaining part exhibiting the pin end. For this purpose, pin parts and retaining parts are placed on opposite sides of the flat product and the insertion part is then driven through the flat product by its pin until its end is pressed out on the opposite side and serves for receiving the retaining part. In order to avoid high manufacturing and material expenditure for a positive fastening between the insertion and retaining parts, it is proposed to pass an electric current surge between the insertion and retaining parts when the parts are pressed on, which current surge causes the contacting points between the pin and its receptacle to melt as a function of the given material thickness of the flat product. The cooled melting points form a weld connection between the insertion and retaining parts which has a high resistance to disconnection.
