The water content of hydraulic brake fluids based on hygroscopic polyglycols and polyglycol ethers is determined by contact with an indicator consisting of diphenylcarbazone and 1,10-phenanthroline or its addition salt. The indicator may be dissolved in a liquid hydrocarbon or be deposited on a paper strip. The discolouration of the red-violet indicator indicates a water content.
