An apparatus for the automatic determination of the object distance has an electronic flash tube which can be triggered by a focusing release, which flash tube is provided with a control electrode and has arranged in front of it an infrared filter with a lens system. A plurality of infrared receiving elements are connected to logic and memory stages, by means of which the change in electrical state both of each individual receiving element and also of at least two neighbouring receiving elements is digitally evaluated separately. A digital stage which signalises the status of the camera lens and which can be influenced by control signals of the lens produces on its output side a signal combination which is compared with the infrared signals in a comparator stage. <IMAGE>
