An intermediate cylinder (17) is arranged in the folding machine (1) for rotary printing presses between a clamping cylinder (13) and a grabbing cylinder (21) which are parallel with one another and which rotate in the same direction. The intermediate cylinder (17) is essentially arranged tangentially to the first mentioned cylinders and rotates in the opposite direction to them. The intermediate cylinder (17) has a plurality of grabbing elements (19) which each accept a singly folded sheet (9) from the clamping cylinder (13).
