The invention relates to a device for avoiding hydrostatic excess pressure under diaphragm seals in earthworks and civil engineering hydraulics. The aim of the invention is a simple and functionally reliable device for avoiding a hydrostatic excess pressure under or behind diaphragm seals, in particular plastic-sheeting seals, as a result of external water at a higher level. This aim is achieved by the fitting of elements acting like valves, mainly made of plastic, into the diaphragm seal. They allow the external water to pass through the seal at an existing excess pressure and thereby make possible a pressure balance. The valve elements close tight in the case of a higher internal water pressure.
