Phosphonic acid derivatives of the formula (I)
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="30" wi="85" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>wherein R<Sup>1</Sup> and R<Sup>2</Sup> are each hydrogen, a cation or an optionally substituted alkyl, alicyclic, or phenyl radical; R<Sup>3</Sup> is hydrogen or alkyl; and R<Sup>4</Sup> may be H, OH, F, NH<Sub>2</Sub>, optionally substituted alkoxy, alkenyloxy or alkynyloxy, or a range of specified acyloxy radicals, or R<Sup>3</Sup> and R<Sup>4</Sup> with the adjacent carbon atom may form a keto group or a functional derivative thereof. The compounds are useful as herbicides.
