In the supply of spinning material and the like to a processing machine, the supply takes place by means of a feed device, mainly a hopper feeder with a vibrating filling shaft. The supply speed of the material to the feed device is obtained, as a function of the determination of the quantity of material supplied to the processing machine, by means of a device for measuring the thickness and/or density of the material. For this, the control of the material supply to the feed device (12) and the determination of the material quantity at the entry point of the processing machine (20) are subdivided into a plurality of, at least into three portions (24, 25, 26) over the working width (23). In each portion (24, 25, 26), the detection of the throughput quantity of material by means of the thickness-measuring device (17a, 17b, 17c) and the corresponding control (41-45) are carried out separately from the adjacent portion. In this way, the filling height of the feed shaft can be regulated with the effect of greater uniformity more accurately and more reliably than hitherto. <IMAGE>
