For slit-protection monitoring of a conveyor belt (21) having lateral strips (22) consisting of conductive rubber in a covering layer, an electrical scanning device (24) is provided for the strips, having four scanning rollers (25, 26, 29, 30) which are arranged side-by-side in the lateral direction of the conveyor belt and are allocated in pairs to the two edge regions of the conveyor belt, in each case with a small lateral distance between the rolls of the pair. A control circuit (36, 39) which can be closed by passing lateral strips (22) runs in each case over the two scanning rollers (25, 26 or 29, 30 respectively) of each pair, the closing of which control circuit activates an interrogating circuit (40, 41) which, in the active state, determines whether a test circuit (39) which covers the entire lateral strip and runs over in each case one scanning roller (25, 30) of both roller pairs is or is not closed. <IMAGE>
