Bicyclic orthoester amides of the formula <IMAGE> are obtained by heating N-acyloxyalkyl-1-aza-3-oxa-2-cycloalkanones in the presence of catalytic amounts of one or more alkaline compounds of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals at 150 to 250 DEG C. Advantageously, this process is carried out at reduced pressure so as to isolate the reaction product simultaneously from the reaction mixture by distillation.
