PURPOSE:To reduce the reject rate and the erroneous read rate considerably, by defining data indicating an answer candidate as the answer only when data indicating the answer candidate for cutting in a normal cut visual field and that for cutting in a moved visual field coincide with each other. CONSTITUTION:A character cutting part 3 cuts character patterns in plural cut visual fields. A cut character pattern is recognized in a recognizing part 4 to obtain an answer candidate. A direction detector 5 which defines the direction of an outside line of a cut visual field as a projection direction when the character pattern is found on this outside line and outputs data indicating this projection direction, and an answer output part 7 which compares data indicating the projection direction and data indicating the answer candidate with each other and outputs data indicating the answer candidate as the answer when both data satisfy prescribed conditions are provided. Thus, the cutting part 3 obtains data indicating the projection direction from the detecting part 5 and moves the cut visual field in the projection direction indicated by this data to cut character patterns. |
