The invention relates to a boom (1) of variable length for a sail rig, the length of the boom being adjustable over a certain range. In the process, the adjustment can be carried out continuously and in a water-tight manner. An adjusting device (20, 26, 38, 40) is provided for the firm but detachable connection between front and rear boom element (23 and 21). The adjusting device has a stop element (26) which is fastened to the front boom element (23) and can be brought into engagement with a check element (20) relatively movable on the rear boom element (21). Provided in the intermediate space (48) between stop element (26) and check element (20) is a transmission element (40) which has a wedge-shaped area (42) with which it comes to bear on the stop element (26) and comes into non-positive connection with the periphery of the rear tube (22). <IMAGE>
