In multimotor drives for through-running webs, guide rollers have the function of guiding the web in the free area between the clamping points whilst maintaining specific properties such as length, extension or tensile stress. So that no significant forces are exerted on the webs by the guide rollers, the speeds of rotation of the guide rollers are controlled. In this process, the static amplification of the control, in the region of small control deviations in the speed of rotation, is set at a high value and, in the case of relatively large control deviations in the speed of rotation, at a higher value. The transition point from large to small amplification can be optionally predetermined. <IMAGE>
