The presser-plate 11 of a multi-plate friction clutch C between an input shaft 1 and an output drum 9 is axially moved to engage, disengage and vary the engaging pressure of the clutch by a piston 16 moved against springs 33 by the centrifugal head of oil between the piston 15 and an identical piston 16 in a cylinder 13 which is rotated independently of the input shaft 1 (or by the input shaft, Fig. 3 not shown) at any selected speed. The cylinder 13 is driven from an external electric motor E through gears 44, 45, is fixed axially of the input shaft 1 and has the piston 15 press-fitted in one end. The pistons 15, 16 have interleaved curved-radial vanes to assist acceleration of the oil, and the piston 15 acts through a thrust race 26 and a sleeve 31 keyed to shaft 1 on the clutch presser-plate 11. An axial bore 36 in the input shaft 1 supplies oil to the pistons 15, 16 and to the clutch plates for cooling. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the fluid actuating piston cylinder (61) is driven at selected speeds from the input shaft 1 through a slipping friction clutch (69), the slip of which is controlled by an electromagnetic winding (B) selectively attracting the cylinder (61) against springs (65) axially away from a clutch plate (66) on the input shaft 1. Both pistons (71, 72) are splined for axial movement in cylinder (61) with piston (72) axially restrained relative to shaft 1 and the cylinder (61). The opposing faces of pistons (71, 72) have radial ribs to assist oil acceleration. |
