PURPOSE:To eliminate the necessity for using a spark plug, form an oxidized catalytic material layer in the internally peripheral surface of a sub-chamber, preheat an oxidized catalytic material to its active temperature by a heater in the outside of the sub-chamber and ignite a mixture in the sub-chamber. CONSTITUTION:An oxidized catalytic material 11 in the internally peripheral surface of a sub-chamber 9 is preheated to active temperature of said material by a heater 12, and a mixture is sucked into a main combustion chamber 1 from an intake port 7. The mixture in the main combustion chamber 1 partially flows into the sub-chamber 9 from a jet 10 in a compression stroke, and is contacted to the oxidized catalytic material in the sub-chamber 9 then ignited. Ignition of this mixture causes generation of a combustion torch in the sub- chamber 9, and the combustion torch is jetted from the jet 10 toward internally of the main combustion chamber 1, then the mixture, compressed in the main combustion chamber 1, can be promptly burned. |
