PURPOSE:To obtain a permanent magnet with increased coercive force and improved squareness by homogenizing an alloy made of an intermetallic compound of a rare earth metal having a specified composition, carrying out soln. treatment and aging, finely pulverizing the alloy, and molding and sintering it. CONSTITUTION:An intermetallic compound of a rare earth metal represented by formulaeI, II (where R is >=1 kind of rare earth metal such as Sm, Y, Ce or Pr, and M is >=1 kind of metal selected from Ti, Ta, Hf, Zr, V, Nb, Cr and Mo) is melted and cast. The resulting alloy is homogenized at 1,180-1,240 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, subjected to soln. treatment by heating at 1,100- 1,170 deg.C, and magnetically hardened by aging. The alloy is finely pulverized to 2-100mum size and mixed with a binder such as resin. The mixture is charged into a metallic mold, molded in a magnetic field with 10-12KG intensity, and compression-molded under 2-10ton/cm<2> pressure. By calcining th molded body by heating at <=400 deg.C, a permanent magnet of a desired shape is accurately manufactured. |
