PURPOSE:To prevent the chipping in a polished surface of a videodisc slice or the like, by moving the material to be polished in a canted direction with respect to the polishing surface of a grindstone so that continuous microcutting is applied to the material to be polished. CONSTITUTION:Tables 12, 19 whose movements in X and Y directions are controllable and on which a supporting rod 4 having its front end secured with a hard but fragile material work 3 such as, for example, diamond, is fixed, are fed in micro-pitches by motors 18, 20, and therefore, the above-mentioned work 3 is moved in a canted direction with respect to the grinding surface of a rotary grindstone 1. Thus, the work 3 is polished by rotating the grindstone 1 while microcutting is applied to the work 3 by the polishing surface of the grindstone 1. Further, the vibration of the work 3 is detected by a vibration detecting means 21 which delivers a signal Vout that is compared with a contact discriminating reference value Vref. With the result of the cmparison, the feed of the above-mentioned work is controlled. |
