1,188,432. Feeding record tapes. AMPEX CORP. 26 Aug., 1968 [2 Oct., 1967], No. 40685/68. Heading G5R. A tape transport having a buffer chamber 36, 52 between each reel 14, 16 and the magnetic transducer head 18 has a further vacuum chamber 64 adjacent to the capstan 60, such that deflection of the tape into the chamber 64 increases the area of contact between the capstan 60 and the tape, and means for damping transient disturbances in tape speed during acceleration and deceleration, and is arranged so that the path for threading the tape into the transport (Fig. 2) does not include deviations into any of the chambers. As shown, the damping means consists of a V-shaped vacuum, chamber 48. The chamber 64 also is V-shaped, with one side tangential to the capstan 60 which is engaged by a vacuum seal 68 incorporating tape guides 70, 71. A screen (77, Fig. 2) shielding the recording and playback transducers from each other is carried by a hinged member 76 which is automatically retracted for tape loading or unloading. A cleaner 30 acts on the oxide side of the tape. |
