The invention relates to a coated shaped object such as a cutting tool with improved technological properties. The object comprises a base which contains at least one metal carbide or a ceramic compound and at least one thin hard- wearing outer layer that is made of a ceramic oxide. The technological properties of such an object can be substantially improved by incorporating small amounts of phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and/or bismuth in the outside layer and/or in the outer zone of the base. <IMAGE> |
