PURPOSE:To impove the performance of cooling by the small-sized device without requiring a radiator, etc. exclusive for the retarder by forming the short- circuit ring of a retarder unit by an annular pipe and mounting a means circylating the coling water of an engine into the pipe. CONSTITUTION:The retarder unit 9 is provided with a magnetic square pillar- shaped iron core 10, a coil bobbin 13, which is fitted to the drum section of the iron core and on which an excitation coil 11 is wound, and the short-circuit ring 14 fitted at the nose of the iron core 10. The nose of the iron core 10 is set up while being adjoined to manetic tees 6, and the tees 6 are excited and magnetized if corrents are flowed through the excitation coil 11 when the iron core 10 is opposed to the tees 6.
