The mechanism has a leg arrangement whose height may be regulated, and a chair back and leg rest whose positions are adjustable. A first link assembly connects the leg to the support frame of the chair seat. The chair back is mounted on a horizontal pivot at the rear of the seat support frame. A second link assembly connects the leg arrangement to the leg-rest. A first motor between the first and second link assemblies raises or lowers the seat and also lifts or retracts the leg rest. A second motor between the first link assembly and the chair back controls movement of the chair back about the horizontal pivot so that it may be raised or lowered or maintained at a desired angle w.r.t. the seat. The mechanism enables elderly or handicapped persons to raise themselves from a sitting to a standing position or vice-cersa.
