The darkening device of a window or door which is produced in frame construction consists of a cell which extends over the entire frame panel. This cell has transparent cover plates or cover foils, which are arranged parallel to one another and are provided with an electrode layer, to which an electric voltage can be applied, on the inner sides facing one another. These electrode layers bound an inner chamber of the cell which is filled with a liquid-crystal layer. The cell further has a polarisation layer on at least one side. Depending on the design of the polarisation layer and the state of the liquid-crystal layer, it is possible to achieve a darkening effect by applying an electric voltage to the electrode layer or by switching off the electric voltage.
