A process for mechanical widthways stretching of a dough strip raw piece (1) transported by an endless cloth (2) along an essentially horizontal path with the help of a spiral roller and a device for carrying out the process. The aim of the invention is to replace the already known transverse rolling process and devices by a simpler process and a simpler device, by means of which the dough strip (1) can be given the desired transverse tension and width. It is characteristic of the process that the pressing means (4) is held separate from the dough strip raw piece (1) by a cloth (2, 2a) or the like running at the same speed as this dough strip raw piece (1), the speed of the spiral roller being independent of the transport speed of the dough strip raw piece. The device according to the invention is in turn characterised in that either the cloth (2) transporting the dough strip raw piece (1) or another cloth (2a) or the like moving at the same speed as the cloth (2) is passed between the pressure roller (4) and dough strip raw piece (1), the pressure roller, whose spiral-like projection on both sides of the centre part of the roller casing surface passes through roughly one turn about the roller, being able to be driven at a high rotary speed independently of the transport speed of the cloth (2, 2a). <IMAGE>
