The invention relates to a device for charging at least one battery (4) which is to be brought into use, the battery which is to be brought into use being charged during a charging process and subsequently being discharged again. A storage battery (3) is provided from which charge is extracted during the charging process via a line (31), by a DC-DC converter (1). The extracted charge is supplied via a further line (41) from the DC-DC converter (1) to the battery (4) which is to be brought into use. The charge which is extracted by the DC-DC converter (1) from the battery (4) which is to be brought into use during the discharge process is supplied to the storage battery (3) by the DC-DC converter (1). A control element (2) passes control signals to the DC-DC converter (1) to initiate the charging or discharging process. Energy can be saved using this device when charging a battery which is to be brought into use. <IMAGE>
