Process for phlegmatising the filling of metal hydride stores

The content of metal hydride stores for storing hydrogen ignites spontaneously when coming into contact with air, for example in the event of a crack or hole forming in the store wall due to an accident, the entire store contents becoming incandescent throughout. This incandescence can be avoided by admixing vermiculite in a quantity of from 1 to 5% by weight to the store material. As soon as the store material reaches a temperature of about 500 DEG C on the side of air ingress, the vermiculite greatly expands and cakes with the store material to form a solid mass. This both prevents store material powder trickling out of the hole and largely stops further air ingress to the store contents.
