The propelling pencil has an automatically operating electromechanical refill feed. The refill (20) is fed by means of a feed unit (13) which grips the refill (20) via a ball locking mechanism (13b, 13g). The feed unit (13) projects with an armature (13b) into a drive movement magnet (14). When the magnet coil (14a) is energised, the armature (13b) is drawn against the magnet core (14b) of the drive movement magnet. In contrast, the refill (20) remains in its original position, since the ball locking mechanism with the balls (13d) opens. When the magnet coil (14a) is deenergised, the armature (13b) moves, and with it, via the ball locking mechanism (13d) which is now closed, the refill (20), under the influence of the untensioned helical spring (13e) in the direction towards the tip of the writing device. This results in an electromechanical movement of the refill feed. The movement magnet (14) is supplied by a battery (18) which is housed at the end of the writing device. Control electronics (19) ensure that the magnet coil is energised in each case only by a pre-controlled quantity of current. <IMAGE>
