Briefly summarised, the invention relates to a safety device for determining when an individual starts to fall asleep and for generating an alarm display or an alarm for the prevention of falling asleep, dozing or nodding off in response to the determination of the closing of the eyelids of the individual. A series of optical pulses is directed toward the eye and reflected by the eye, to be precise in a manner such that the determination of the series of reflected pulses indicates closing of the eye. A signal processing circuit is provided in order to prevent false alarms due to blinking, winking or the like and background changes. The device can be built in a simple manner into or onto conventional spectacles.
