A staircase lift with an electric drive has a housing (17) for receiving a cable (14) for the drive. Several housing pulleys (22-24) are mounted behind or above one another in a tackle shape inside the housing (17). In addition, several slide pulleys (19-21) corresponding to the housing pulleys (22-24) are mounted inside a slide (18) displaceably arranged in the housing (17), the cable (14) being wound in a tackle shape over the housing pulleys (22-24) and slide pulleys (19-21). Through this arrangement, the requisite cable extension during travel of the staircase lift in one direction can be taken from the housing (17) as required, or the released cable length can be stored in the housing (17) in a simple manner during travel of the staircase lift in the opposite direction of travel. <IMAGE>
