The system detects any attempts to penetrate into the spaces concerned. It uses glass fibre light conductors which are fitted to specific walls, floors and ceilings in a predetermined pattern. One end of the glass fibre light conductors is coupled with a light emitting source and the other end coupled to a light sensitive detector. Penetration of the enclosed area, with consequent breaking of the fibre-optic link, actuates an alarm. The glass fibre light conductors (21) are divided into sections and embedded in the wall panels. The sections of the different panels are coupled to form a single conductor. A closed-circuit TV camera is also provided, its video output being fed down the optical fibre by modulation of the light beam. Two fibres, following differing paths, carry the video signals.
