Novel compounds having the formula <FORM:1107739/C2/1> wherein A is -CH2-CH2- and wherein R is H, alkyl, aryl, bromoaryl, acyl or aralkyl, each R being the same or different, may be prepared from the compound <FORM:1107739/C2/2> by oximation of the keto group, followed by reduction of the resultant oxime group and the -CH=CH- group. Optionally the OH groups may be etherified or acylated. Acid addition salts are also referred to. Therapeutic compositions having estrogenic and growth-promoting activity comprise a compound of the first formula given above together with a suitable diluent, and may take the form of an animal feed or an injection suspension, e.g. in peanut oil.
