Tri-aryl lead halides of the general formula wherein the radicals Ar are substituted or unsubstituted aryl radicals and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, are prepared by reacting a hexa-aryl di-lead compound of the formula Ar 6 Pb 2 with a hypohalous acid. The aryl groups may contain up to 12 carbon atoms and may be substituted by halogen atoms or nitro or alkoxy groups. The hypohalous acid is preferably formed in situ by reacting a hydrogen halide and an alkali or alkaline earth metal hypohalite at a pH of not less than 4. The medium for carrying out the reaction is either a homogeneous or a non-homogeneous system of solvents, both the hexa-aryl di-lead compound and the hypohalite salt being soluble in at least one component in the case of a non-homogeneous system. The reaction is carried out by adding a hydrogen halide or an aqueous solution thereof to a mixture of the hexa-aryl di-lead salt compound and a slight stoichiometric excess of hypohalite salt in the medium until the whole of the hexa-aryl di-lead compound has reacted. |
