New synthesis of alpha-aminobenzylpenicillin

Synthesis of 6-(D(-)-alpha-aminophenylacetamido) penicillanic acid (I) by the method given below. By condensing 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) with a deriv. of D(-)-2-phenylglycine of formula (II), where R = protecting gp. as used in peptide synthesis, e.g. -CMe=CH.Ac, -CMe=CH.COOMe or -COOCH2Ph R' = succinimido, phthalimido or piperidino Gives a product of high optical purity.
