The walls of the pores or cells of a foam plastic band, strip or sheet, consisting substantially of an elastic material are covered, but the pores or cells are not filled, by applying to the foam structure an impregnating mass which is at least one molten substance other than asphalt bitumen. The molten substance may be a fusible resin, either a single resin or a mixture of such resins the composition of which is adjusted to give the desired thermal stability to the foam plastic band, strip or sheet e.g. coumarone-indene resins, or hydrocarbon resins produced by polymerisation of unsaturated hydrocarbons; or hydrocarbon compounds such as paraffins or waxes having a melting point of, for example, 65 to 120 DEG C., to which a synthetic resin such as polyisobutylene may be added. The molten substance may also contain age resistors and/or light protective agents, and non-melting components such as combustion resistors e.g. antimony trioxide or heavy spar, colouring pigments. The foam plastic may be polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, cellulose, or foam rubber. The material may be used for sealing purposes in buildings or may be adhered to stone, concrete, iron and non ferrous metals. The material may be produced by passing the band, strip or sheet of foam plastic through the molten impregnating mass. |
