In the case of a web-fed rotary press having two plate cylinders (5, 6) and two rubber-covered cylinders (7, 8) per printing mechanism (1 to 4), by means of which press one or two printing carrier webs (19, 20) can be optionally printed at the same time, circumferential register adjustment means (25, 26, 29, 30) are provided by means of which the start-of-print lines of the plate cylinders of two printing mechanisms (1, 2) can be optionally made to overlap or can be displaced towards one another at least over a distance equal to the width of the cylinder grooves. In order to avoid mackling and folding when this machine is used for the continuous printing on two printing carrier webs (19, 20), the two printing carrier webs (19, 20) can be guided separately from one another through the machine between a plate cylinder (5 or 6 respectively) in each case and the associated rubber-covered cylinder (7 or 8 respectively) which acts as a printing cylinder. In this process, the rubber-covered cylinders (7, 8) are lifted away from one another. <IMAGE>
