<p>A method and machine for forming a complete stamping die. A material erosion machining apparatus (10) with a movable bed (20) and an extractor (16) is used to draw a male punch (55, 155) from a female die blank (57, 157). The female die blank (57, 157) has a rough-cut die opening (60, 160). The part removed from blank (57, 157) is a rough-cut male die punch (55, 155). The die opening side walls (64, 164) and the rough-cut punch side walls (63, 163) are generally parallel and tapered in the direction of the intended die draft. The die punch (55, 155) fits in the rough-cut die opening (60, 160) of the female die blank (57, 157). The bed (20) and the ram platen (16) are moved away from each other, simultaneously with material removing electrical energy between bed (20) and extractor (16). One work piece (57, 157) is attached to bed (20) and the other work piece (55, 155) is attached to the extractor (16) and, as bed (20) and extractor (16) are moved, the die punch blank is moved through the die opening (60, 160) of the female die blank (57, 157) with the tapered side walls (63, 163) and (64,164) in opposition to the direction of movement. As this passage is made, material is removed from the female die blank (57, 157) and the male die punch (55, 155) to generate the preselected die draft, die clearance, and exact registration. A complete die set is so formed by the method and machine.</p> |
